The Scarborough boys lacrosse team keeps rolling along.

On Saturday, on a sunny, but breezy day, the Red Storm (3-1) put on a furious late-game surge to top North Yarmouth Academy on the road 9-6.

The game was a tight one in the first half, and Scarborough found itself down early as the Panthers’ Gus Wellin grabbed a pass in front with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter and put it past Scarborough goalie Joe Kennedy for a 1-0 lead.

But that was the last time the Panthers would lead in the game.

Just about 2:30 later, the Red Storm tied the game when Daniel Clark found Christopher Kipp in front of the Panthers’ net and Kipp buried a shot to tie the game at one.

Then, just about a minute-and-a-half later, Scarborough took the lead when Clark stole the ball at midfield, cut to the net and, after faking a pass, fired a high shot past Panthers’ goalie Matt Ward to make the score 2-1.

The second quarter opened with the score still at 2-1, and the opening minutes featured some nice defensive work, with Kennedy making several nice saves on point-blank Panther shots.

With just over five minutes left to go in the first half, the Red Storm increased their lead when Kipp found Jake Barrett in front of the net, and Barrett put it past Ward to make it 3-1.

But, less than a minute later, the Panthers got back into the game, when playing with a man advantage after a Storm penalty, Michael LeBlanc scored to close the gap to 3-2.

The Panthers then tied the game at three with just 3.8 seconds to go in the half when Cam Smith scored.

Coming out for the second half, the Red Storm were determined to regain their lead, and they did just 38 seconds into the period when, taking advantage of a North Yarmouth Academy penalty, Barrett scored to give Scarborough a 4-3 advantage. The Red Storm made it 5-3 three minutes later when Clark scored with an assist from Kipp.

But, as they would all game, the Panthers battled back.

With just over six minutes to go in the third, with Scarborough down a man, Wellin fired a low shot past Kennedy to cut the lead to 5-4. Then, the Panthers tied the game thanks to a Taylor Gorman goal with 4:27 left in the third.

Once again, Scarborough pulled themselves together and refused to let the momentum slide away. With 6:30 left in the fourth quarter, Scarborough’s Ryan Hunt wheeled from in back of the Panther net and scored to make it 6-5.

That was the start of an offensive explosion that put the game away for the Red Storm.

With 5:46 left in the game, Barrett slammed a hard shot past Ward to make it 7-5. Then, less than a minute later, Clark fired a low shot that found the back of the net to give the Storm an 8-5 lead. Just 11 seconds later, Nick Broadhurst grabbed a face off and ran down the field and put it home to give Scarborough a 9-5 lead.

The Panthers did get one late goal to cut the lead to 9-6, but were unable to get any more offense going, and Scarborough walked away with the hard-earned win.
