Papers available

Nomination papers for two seats on the Gorham Town Council and three seats on the Gorham School Board for the Nov. 4 annual municipal election are now available at the town clerk’s office.

Council seats available are those of Jane S. Knapp and Mike Phinney. Expiring School Board terms are those of Dennis Libby, Janet Williams and Steve Caldwell, the vice chairman. The seats on both boards are for three-year terms.

Nominees must obtain no less than 25 nor more than 100 signatures from registered Gorham voters and return the completed papers by Sept. 19 in order to have their name placed on the ballot.

Blueberry gala

The West Gorham Union Church, Route 25, is sponsoring a blueberry gala 8 a.m.-2 p.m. on Saturday.

A blueberry pancake breakfast kicks off the event from 8-10 a.m., and lunch will be served 11 a.m.-1 p.m. In addition, fresh blueberries, blueberry pastries and baked goods will be for sale.

The breakfast is $5, $3.

The event also includes a silent auction featuring blueberry theme items.

Golf tourney plans

Foursomes for the annual Sappi Golf Tournament at the Gorham Country Club are asked to contact organizers no later than Friday.

A shotgun start for the tournament, which will be held rain or shine, will be at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6. The entry fee is $65 per player; $37 for Gorham Country Club members. The fee includes green fee, golf cart, barbecue and prizes.

Craig on dean’s list

Neil Craig of Gorham has been named to the dean’s list for the spring semester at Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Ga.

Craig is majoring in visual effects.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The U.S. Bureau of Public Debt reported on Aug. 7 that the U.S. public debt was $9,571,432,990,910.15
