In the final meet of the regular season, the Scarborough High cross country teams came out on top of a five-team field on Friday afternoon at their home course at Smiling Hill Farm in Westbrook.

The Red Storm boys took five of the top eight spots to tally 27 points, well ahead of second-place Bonny Eagle, which finished with 47. Windham took third (73) and was followed by Gorham (77) and Westbrook (143).

Scarborough’s Craig Robinson won the race in 16:47, traversing the soggy course and dodging mud puddles on his way to a 21-second winning margin.

“(The conditions) slowed down the time,” Robinson said. “In certain places you had to watch where you were going because the mud was so deep that you had to go around it.”

Coming in second was Tim Belanger of Bonny Eagle, who finished in 17:08. Windham’s Garrett Clemmer was third in 17:39 and Gorham’s Logan Marshall was fourth in 17:40. Then came four straight Scarborough runners. Brad Nakanishi was fifth (17:54), Sean Griffin was sixth (18:05), Joe Prosack was seventh (18:24) and David O’Sullivan-Frost rounded out the Red Storm scorers in eighth (18:36).

Scarborough’s depth makes the team a favorite to win Saturday’s Western Maine Class A Regional Championship meet at Twin Brook in Cumberland.

“This year in the big meets, the way that we have such a strong 1-5 pack, when there’s a lot of runners, I think we can place pretty well,” said Robinson, who downplayed the Red Storm’s No. 1 ranking in the latest statewide MTCCCA/USM high school cross country poll.

“We don’t look too much into that, but if we run our best I think we’ll do well,” he said.

On the girls side, Scarborough put five runners in the top 14 to win with 41 points. In second was Bonny Eagle (50), followed by Gorham (62), Windham (75) and Westbrook (150). Emily Durgin of Bonny Eagle won the race in 18:49. She outdistanced the field by more than 40 seconds. Gorham’s Rachel Wilkinson was second (19:33), followed by Bonny Eagle’s Lauren Dudley (20:35) and Amber Dostie (20:37).

Then came the Red Storm. Melissa Dellatorre took fifth (20:39) with teammate Whitney Chamberlain on her heals (20:41). Scarborough’s Abby Chick was next across the line (20:59). Sarah Dugas (ninth, 21:28) and Meghan Summerson (14th, 22:03) rounded out the scoring for the Red Storm, currently ranked second in the state in the MTCCCA/USM poll, behind only Cape Elizabeth.
