Have you heard? We, the residents of Scarborough, have been deemed worthy of some amazing generosity. Our town would be blessed with riches beyond our wildest dreams, and for free. At no cost to us. As the Village Partnership puts it in their latest attractive, full-color ad: “New Wentworth School. Community Center and Pool. New Police and Fire Station. Lower Taxes.”

My fellow residents, all we need to do is just crack open Pandora’s Box, just a wee tiny bit. That’s all.

This seems to good to be true. Oh, that’s right, as the delusions of grandeur fade from my head, I remember – that’s because it is.
