The Scarborough Red Storm hockey team is 3-1 on the young season after bouncing back from its first defeat of the season at the hands of Cape Elizabeth on Saturday to beat Bonny Eagle on Monday evening.

The Scots (0-3) played the Storm tough through the first two periods, as Scarborough went into the final period with a 4-3 lead. But a four-goal offensive explosion in the third clinched the 8-4 win for the Red Storm.

Bonny Eagle actually got out to a quick early lead in this one as Taylor Bishop beat Scarborough goaltender Neil Suchecki at 5:23 of the first period. Scarborough got the tying goal late in the period when senior forward Neil Ravin scored an unassisted power play goal at 13:48 of the first.

That kicked off a parade of power play goals for the Storm, as their next three goals came with the man advantage. Just 39 seconds into the second, Nate Gadbois scored on the power play with an assist from Andrew Nigro to give the Storm a 2-1 lead.

Bonny Eagle quickly battled back to take a 3-2 lead on goals from Curtis Rowe at 1:18 of the period and Zach Litif scored to give the Scots the lead at 3:09 of the period.

But that was as far as the Scots would get. The Storm tied it on a Zach Pettingill power play goal at 8:51 of the second and took the lead for good when Nigro scored an unassisted power play goal at 13:39 of the period.

Scarborough kept the heat on in the third as Gadbois got his second goal of the game at the 3:52 mark. Sean Milligan made it 6-3 in favor of the Storm less than a minute later when he scored on assists from Pettingill and Ravin at 4:16. Nick Tolman made it 7-3 with an unassisted goal at 4:16 of the third. Bonny Eagle tried to mount a comeback late as Sean Walsh closed the gap to 7-4 with less than five minutes to go, but Gadbois put the game out of reach and completed the hat trick by scoring on an assist from Tolman at 12:27.

On Saturday, the Cape Elizabeth Capers handed Scarborough its first loss of the season with a come-from-behind 2-1 win at the USM Ice Arena. The win moved the Capers to 2-0 on the season.

Both teams played solid defense throughout this one and neither team was able to score on the power play, as the Capers went 0-5 and the Storm was 0-6 with the man advantage.

Scarborough got the only goal of the period at the 10:36 mark as forward Trevor Hoxsie got the puck behind the Cape net. He passed out front to senior forward Hunter Wood, who evaded the tough Caper defense and put it past Cape goalie Phil Jordan to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead.

The Capers got a couple of chances on the power play in the first, including one where Cape forward Sean Eubanks got the puck at center ice near the end of the period and he found junior forward Sam St. Germain streaking down the wing. St. Germain got off a good shot, but Scarborough goalie Matt Mayo (who had 20 saves in the game), made a nice blocker save to keep the score at 1-0.

Both teams came out playing aggressively in the second, but despite several solid scoring chances, neither team had much luck getting the puck past Mayo or Jordan (who finished the game with 25 saves).

Finally, late in the second period, Cape’s aggressive play paid off as the Capers evened the score. With just 2:39 left in the period, St. Germain got the puck down behind the Storm net and he shoveled it out front to sophomore forward Reid Douty in the slot. Douty’s shot beat Mayo, and the game was tied at one. Zack Labbe had the second assist on the goal for the Capers.

The third period was a penalty-filled affair as the Capers had two power plays and the Storm had three. But despite having the advantage, both teams were unable to break through for the go-ahead goal.

Scarborough had a good shot at the go-ahead score with 2:40 to go in the third when Hoxsie fired a quick shot at Jordan, who just got a piece of it to preserve the tie.

Then with just 1:04 left to play in regulation, Cape got the game-winner when Labbe, who had just come back on the ice after serving a penalty, slid in past the Scarborough defense and fired a low shot that just went through Mayo’s pads and trickled into the net to give Cape the 2-1 win. St. Germain and Owen Pearson were credited with assists on the goal.
