BIDDEFORD — Sara Grover registered her second four-goal game in a row, and a solid defense allowed just nine shots on goal, as Biddeford notched a 6-1 win over Deering, in a varsity girls hockey tilt at Biddeford Ice Arena, Monday.
Grover scored twice in the first period, a stanza that saw the Tigers (2-1) outshoot the visitors, 20-2.
Only strong work by Rams (0-3) goalie Julie Pallozzi kept the score from getting out of hand early on.
“It usually takes a little bit of the first period to get rolling,” said Tigers defenseman Kellie Renk. “But once we do, we get results.”
Grover got herself rolling at the 3:57 mark, when she lashed in a power play goal from the right circle, the puck finding space just under the crossbar.
She struck again at 11:25, when her 15-footer rang both the crossbar and the right post on its way past Pallozzi.
Deering took just one shot in the second period, but scored on it when Tiffany Ledbetter polished off a clean breakaway.
It came at the 4:00 mark, cut the Tiger lead to 2-1, and made matters a little too close for Biddeford coach Marie Potvin’s liking.
“I thought we looked a little sloppy in the warmup,” Potvin said. “I thought we were a little flat. We took shot after shot into her (Pallozzi’s) pads. We got our share of shots. We just didn’t move her.”
Grover gave the Tigers some breathing room with two second period goals, giving her eight for the young season.
Her fourth tally of the game came at 13:35, and was followed just 10 seconds later by Francie Foehrenbach’s goal, which came out of a goal mouth scramble.
Olivia Gagnon capped the scoring in the third period.
“We got a lot of shots off, which was good,” said Renk. “But we were hoping for more goals.”
Biddeford will return to action, Saturday (4:30 p.m.), when arch-rival Cheverus skates into BIA.
