PORTLAND — Virginia S. Wieland, 96, of Cape Elizabeth, died Feb. 28 at the Barron Center.

She was born in Cape Elizabeth in 1903, a daughter of Captain Amos Jay and Ethel Jordan Armstrong Carr.  After she attended schools in Massachusetts and Panama, she graduated from Cape Elizabeth High School.

She married Frank G. Wieland in Phoenix, Ariz., and lived in St. Louis, Miss., until his death on March 27, 1975. 

After his death, she moved back to Cape Elizabeth.

A passion for dancing, she especially enjoyed ballroom and square dancing.

Her other interests included cross country skiing, bicycle riding, and she loved animals, particularly birds and cats.

She was predeceased by her husband Frank, brothers, Amos Jay Carr Jr., Kenneth Carr, her sister, Ethel (Carr) Cameron, and a nephew, Schyler Higgins.

Surviving are her sister, Priscilla Carr Cochran of South Portland; three nephews, Joseph Higgins and his wife Dorothy, Andrew Carr and his wife Debra, and Stewart Carr, all of Cape Elizabeth, and a niece, Ena (Carr) Hanson and her husband Steven of Long Island.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Barron Center, 1145 Brighton Ave., Portland, ME 04102.

Memorial services were held on Wednesday.

Arrangements are by Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Road, South Portland.
