BOSTON — Prosecutors will ask for a 25-year prison sentence for a computer hacker who helped orchestrate one of the largest thefts of credit and debit card numbers in U.S. history.
Albert Gonzalez, a one-time federal informant from Miami, will be sentenced in Boston later this week after pleading guilty last year to hacking into the computer systems of major retailers, including Hannaford Brothers Inc., TJX Cos. and Dave & Buster’s.
The 25 years to be sought by prosecutors is the maximum under the terms of plea agreements in cases against Gonzalez brought in Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York.
His lawyer will argue that the 28-year-old Gonzalez should get no more than 15 years.
Two federal judges will sentence Gonzalez Thursday and Friday in U.S. District Court.
