AUGUSTA — Earth Day is being observed in Maine with events ranging from a composting promotion to outdoor tours and a community lawn sale.

Portland is promoting the sale of compost bins, kitchen waste pails and rain barrels at discounted prices. The city says home composting combined with recycling and yard waste programs can reduce household waste by up to 80 percent and save taxpayers money.

In Augusta, the Viles Arboretum is offering a tour of the tree and plant preserve at noon.

Winthrop’s Green Committee and local businesses organized a week of events, ranging from a community lawn sale, movie nights, and a ’70s theme dance.
