LEWISTON — A Lewiston bird club is saying no to dogs at its bird sanctuary.

Officials with the Stanton Bird club voted Monday to ban dogs from the 357-acre Thorncrag Nature Sanctuary in Lewiston.

Stanton President Thomas Robustelli says the board hopes to create a “model bird sanctuary.”

The Sun Journal of Lewiston says that for months, the group has been weighing the desire of dog owners to use the preserve against its mission to protect birds and other wildlife. There have also been complaints the dogs frightened other animals and some owners wouldn’t clean up after their dogs.
