PORTLAND — Riverton Elementary School will get as much as $3.4 million in federal funding to improve reading and math proficiency, the state Department of Education announced this week.
Riverton is one of seven Maine schools that will receive a portion of a $13.3 million grant awarded to the state through an American Recovery and Reinvestment Act School Improvement Grant.
The money will go toward professional development, before- and after-school and summer programs and other initiatives aimed at making significant improvement in student achievement, according to the Maine DOE.
The department plans to announce specific amounts for each of the schools within the next week or two. Schools will receive between $700,000 and $3.4 million.
The other schools are Gov. James B. Longley Elementary School in Lewiston, Sumner Memorial High School, Carrabec High School, Deer Isle-Stonington High School, Lake Region High School in Naples and Livermore Falls High School.
