PORTLAND — Maine Democrats and Republicans are holding fundraisers this month, in preparation for the fall election season.

This evening, Democrats will gather at the home of former gubernatorial candidate Rosa Scarcelli.

The event at the Portland home of Scarcelli and her husband Thom Rhoads is to raise money for Maine Victory 2010, which supports the campaigns of Democrats running for Congress in Maine, gubernatorial candidate Libby Mitchell, and Democrats running for the Maine House and Senate.

Scarcelli was one of the four Democratic gubernatorial candidates in the June primary, which was won by Mitchell.

Top Democrats attending the fundraiser include special guest Gov. John Baldacci.

On Aug. 26, state Republicans will host a Calvin Coolidge Clambake.

The Maine Republican Liberty Caucus will hold the event at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. They’ll serve up lobster and steak for $50 or $45.

Organizers say the events celebrates the legacy of the “laissez faire” president who tackled corruption in government and tried to stay out of the way of businesses.

Keynote speaker will be John Fund, a columnist for the Wall Street Journal. The event is not affiliated with the Maine Republican Party.
