WESTBROOK – Does your family have a bunch of used baseball bats and gloves, hockey pads and helmets, lacrosse sticks, football gear or any other sports equipment lying around?

Chances are, if your house is like many typical homes with sports-playing kids, you do. And once the season is over, or the stuff is outgrown, there is plenty of perfectly good sports gear that is lying around unused.

Now, some Westbrook kids are doing something about that. Morgan, Shannon and Maura Rielly, the children of Westbrook City Council President Brendan Rielly, are organizing a community service project called Re*Play to raise money for scholarships so Westbrook kids can participate in the Westbrook Recreation Department’s sports and activities.

With Re*Play, families can donate clean, gently used sports gear, which will be organized and sold at low cost so kids who need gear, but don’t have much money, can buy what they need. The money raised from the sale will go to the recreation department’s scholarship fund.

The equipment will be collected during the week of Sept. 13 at drop-off boxes at all Westbrook schools, Westbrook City Hall and at the Westbrook Community Center. The sale will be held on Sept. 24 from 6-9 p.m. and Sept. 25 from 8-11:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the Westbrook Community Center, which is located in the old junior high school building. In case of rain, the sale will be moved inside to the gym of the Westbrook Community Center.
