Coach: Kevin Cooper

Last year’s record: 7-3, lost to Windham in Class A West semifinal

Key players: Matt Rollins, senior, QB/S; John MacDonald, senior, RG/DT; Nate Martel, senior, LG/NG/K; Cameron McKague, senior, WR/CB; Ethan Thorne, senior, RB/CB; Jeff Amell, senior, TE/OLB and Nick Cawood, senior, C/DT

Key games: South Portland, Windham

Season outlook: After winning it all in 2008, the Scots were severely disappointed with the way the 2009 season ended, with a heartbreaking loss to Windham in the Class A West semifinals. The loss was still on their mind in the preseason this fall. “Ever since Jackson Taylor with the Windham Eagles completed that two-point conversion last year, that’s all we’ve been thinking about,” said senior Matt Rollins after a scrimmage with Thornton Academy. With the motivation of making up for last year on their minds, the Scots got 2010 off to a strong start on Sept. 3 with a big 36-0 win over Westbrook. With that first win behind them, the Scots will have to stay focused and not look ahead to the big Oct. 8 rematch at Windham if they want to stay in the title picture all season.

Girls soccer

Coach: Ed Taylor

Last year’s record: 3-11

Key players: Kate Boyer, senior striker. “She is fast, creative and has equal power in both feet,” Taylor said. “She is a scorer.” Nicole Taylor, senior center mid. “She has incredible field vision and can distribute the ball with accuracy and has equal power in both feet,” Taylor said. Brenna Martin, senior stopper. “She can control the middle either north and south or east and west,” the coach said. “Great vision coming out of the back and has equal power in both feet.”

Key game: “Our key game this season was our first game against Windham,” Taylor said of the Scots’ 0-0 tie in the season opener on Sept. 3. “They are very good and it was my measuring stick to see if we were ready to play. We are ready.”

Season outlook: “If we continue to grow as a team and make baby steps to improve our game everyday, we will be fine,” Taylor said.

Coach: Caterina Riitano

Last year’s record: 14-4-1

Key players: Seniors: Nicole DeMidio, forward; Payton Dostie, forward and Pauline Adams, back. Junior Nicole Hurley, midfield and freshman Cassidy Merrill, mid/forward

Key games this season: Westbrook, Scarborough, Cheverus, Gorham

Season outlook: “We are a young team, graduated 15 players- eight were starters,” Riitano said. “From what I see, every team is young this year and graduated a large senior class last year. I think we are going to hold our own. I believe we will do well again this year. We have upcoming players that I believe will be an asset to the team.”

Golf

Coach: John Gubelman

Last year’s record: 8-2

Key players: According to Gubelman, junior Brad Myers was a qualifier for the state tournament last season, and is performing well this year. Additionally, senior Joe Call should be very reliable. The team graduated six seniors in 2009, but has reloaded with a further six this year. Although somewhat young, with nearly half of the 19 varsity players being underclassmen, Gubelman appears pleased with how his lineup is looking so far. “(Next year) could be thin, though,” he said, looking even farther ahead.

Key matches: “I’ve been coaching for 10 years, and last year we came very close to beating Thornton at their place,” Gubelman said. “We lost to them by one stroke. But I have to tell you that our team is very good this year, and there is the possibility that Thornton isn’t as strong as they have been in the past.” Other key matchups include Kennebunk and Biddeford.

Season outlook: Although the Scots are somewhat young, Gubelman expects to have an excellent season against Thornton Academy, perhaps earning the Scots’ first victory against the Trojans in over a decade.

Boys and girls cross country

Coach: Greg Wilkinson

Key athletes: For the boys, the Scots will call upon top returning senior Greg Martin, as well as two new additions to the team, seniors Joey Collins and Christian Malarsie. “Both have come up for the first time,” Wilkinson said, “but both are very strong runners. For the girls, Bonny Eagle will build their team around senior Amber Dostie and sophomore Sam Cox. New to the team are freshmen Kristen Glennie and Audrey Weyand, as well as German exchange student Nina Steigerhagen, who Wilkinson says has been an extremely nice pickup for the Scots.

Key meets: For the boys, Wilkinson expects stiff competition from Scarborough, Cheverus, Gorham and Massabesic. On the girls side, Scarborough, Cheverus, Massabesic, Thornton Academy, and potentially South Portland should pose a challenge.

Season outlook: “For the boys, our team goal is just to see some improvement,” Wilkinson said. “There are some very good teams in this league, so we’d like them to go out there, work hard, and have fun. As for the girls, last year was the first time that the girls have not qualified for states, so our goal is obviously to get back there.”

The Bonny Eagle boys soccer preview was not available as of deadline.
