Football

Coach: Dave Kilborn

Last year’s record: 3-5

Key players: Seniors: QB/LB Joey Lynch, DB James Lewis, LB/TE Kyle Nielsen, RB/DB Kam Alexander and RB/DB Steve Verrill; Juniors: TE/NG Kyle Nealey, FB/DE Nick Kilborn, OT/DT Dylan Whitaker and OT/DT Dominic Deluca

Key games this season: Cheverus, Westbrook

Season outlook: The Rams got the 2010 season off to a tough start, with a lopsided 40-6 loss to Cheverus in the season opener on Sept. 3. But despite that loss, the Rams are still optimistic about this season, especially as their team starts to get experience. “Depth is a concern as we have a large number of players on our team but not a huge number of players that have varsity football experience,” Kilborn said. “We will start with a number of underclassmen that have developed nicely over the past several years. We have the potential to knock off any team on any given night, but we will have to play without costly penalties and turnovers.”

Girls soccer

Coach: Jeanne Zarrilli

Last year’s record: 11-2-1

Key players: Sam Peters, senior defense; Alexandra Tracy, senior mid and Shelbi Guimond, senior striker

Key games: Scarborough, Thornton Academy

Season outlook: After running roughshod over Class A West for the past several years, 2009 marked the first year that the Rams did not make an appearance in the Class A state championship game since winning three state championships in a row and losing in the final in 2008. Still, the Rams did get as far as the Western regional finals last season, and there’s no reason to believe that they won’t be in the mix for a championship this year as well.

Volleyball

Coach: Lisa Curley

Last year’s record: 5-9

Key players: Captains Moira Keahon and Vicki Parker, Leaha Keene, Caite Robinson, Taylor Hansen, Kaitlyn Seehusen, and Lindsay Chapman

Season outlook: “The girls have put more time in during the offseason than ever before,” Curley said. “Many of our key players played on a Junior Olympic team during the winter. We also sent 12 of the girls to a summer camp at UNH, which the girls really enjoyed. I am hopeful that this will translate into a new level of passion for the game and refined skills. Our strengths should be serving and ball control. The team looks great coming into preseason. We participated in a preseason tourney at Greely. We played strong in pool play, had a close match against Falmouth to get into the gold medal winner’s match, and then lost to Greely in the final set. I was very proud of my girls. I saw exactly what I was hoping for on the court. They did so many things well, had great team chemistry, and played their hearts out.”

The Gorham boys and girls cross country previews were not available as of the American Journal’s deadline
