CUMBERLAND — Democrat Cindy Bullens announced her withdrawal from the state Senate District 11 race on Wednesday and threw her support behind the campaign of independent Richard Woodbury.

Her decision reduces the field to three candidates.

“Six months ago I became a candidate for state Senate because I wanted to give back to the community I love and make sure our shared values were represented in Augusta,” Bullens said in a press release. “I remain committed to that goal today, and for that reason I am withdrawing from the District 11 Senate race and throwing my full support behind Dick Woodbury’s campaign.

“The needs of our district and our state are bigger than any one person,” she continued. “Now is not the time for partisan politics. Rather, now is the time to come together behind one leader – because we care about our communities, our businesses, and the future we’re building for our children.”

Bullens is a twice Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter, as well as a small business owner who manages two Maine-based music companies. She is also the co-founder and a director of the Jessie D. Bullens-Crewe Foundation and the Jessie B-C Fund. Both were named for her 11-year-old daughter, who died in 1996 of complications during treatment for Hodgkin’s disease.

Bullens noted that she and Woodbury, a Yarmouth resident and former independent state representative, “agree in far more ways than we disagree. Protecting our environment, investing in quality education for Maine children, building a health care system that works for everyone, and finding new and innovative ways to support small business development are values we both share with the people of this district.”

Sen. Gerald Davis, R-Falmouth, is the incumbent in the district. Chris Miller of Gray, a Maine Green Independent, is also on the ballot.

District 11 includes Cumberland, Chebeague Island, Falmouth, Gray, Yarmouth, North Yarmouth and Long Island.
