PORTLAND — Edward W. “Ed” Doherty Jr., 74, a lifelong resident of Munjoy Hill, died Sept. 20 at his home.
 
Born in Portland on April 25, 1936, he was a son of Edward W. Sr. and Helen J. (Flaherty) Doherty, and attended local schools.

After graduating from Cheverus High School in 1954, he served in the U.S. Army until 1957.

Following his military service, he began his longtime career with the U.S. Postal Service, first as a letter carrier, then serving briefly as acting Postmaster of South Portland and Saco. In 1992 he retired as supervisor of letter carriers for Portland.

On June 28, 1958, he married Mary E. Mullen.

Later on, he attended the University of Southern Maine, where he received his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1971.
 
He was proud of his Irish heritage, and was known as a kind, thoughtful and caring man.

With an appreciation for fine arts, he enjoyed discussing literature, especially Miguel de Cervantes’ “Don Quixote.”

He had a deep love for all dogs and would take his dogs with him everywhere.

For many years he was a lector at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.

He was also a member of the Association of the United States Army, Joshua Chamberlain Chapter, AMVETS Post 25 in Portland, and the American Legion Post 161 in Portland.
 
Surviving are his four children; two sons, Martin J. Doherty and his wife Sherry of Scarborough and Mark E. Doherty of Falmouth, and two daughters, Lori L. Doherty-Twomey and her husband David Twomey of Saco, and Beth A. Martin and her husband Bill of South Portland; his sister, Joan LaFrance of Standish; his former wife, Mary E. Doherty of Saco; seven grandchildren, Helena Twomey, William Martin, Joseph Martin, Alicia Chappell, Connor Doherty, Michael Doherty, and Ian Doherty; a great-granddaughter, Isabella Martin; cousins; nieces and a nephew; and his dog, Sam.
 
Memorial services were held last weekend.

Arrangements are by Conroy-Tully Crawford Funeral Home, 172 State St., Portland.
