PORTLAND — Firefighters put out a three-alarm fire in downtown Portland that led to the evacuation of several buildings.
Deputy Fire Chief Robert Wassick says the blaze was put out before dawn today after it had burned for a few hours.
He says three firefighters sustained minor injuries of various types fighting the blaze and were treated and released. No one else was hurt.
More than a dozen people who live in the three-story building were evacuated, and several blocks of Congress Street were closed.
WCSH-TV reported that at one point firefighters were ordered out of the building, and hoses from trucks were used to contain the fire. Neighboring buildings were also emptied as a precaution.
Wassick says an investigation is under way to determine what started the fire.
