SOUTH PORTLAND – A mother and son from Massachusetts were arrested early Sunday morning by South Portland police after authorities received a tip that drug dealers were operating out of a hotel on the Maine Mall Road, according to Sgt. Steve Webster.

An investigation following the tip led to a traffic stop on Western Avenue near the Portland line, Webster said in a press release. As a result of the traffic stop, Mattie Brown, 60, of Randolph, Mass., was arrested and charged with trafficking in schedule W drugs, namely heroin. Her son, Robert Brown, 39, also of Masschusetts, was arrested and charged with refusal to submit to arrest and detention.

A search of their hotel room yielded more than 50 grams of suspected heroin, an ounce of suspected cocaine, several Oxycontin and oxycodone tablets and close to $10,000 in cash, Webster said.

As of Monday, Mattie Brown was being held at the Cumberland County Jail on a bail of $100,000 cash, with the condition that she not leave the state if she posts bail. She is charged with aggravated trafficking in heroin, a class A crime, and trafficking in cocaine, a class B crime. The investigation in ongoing, Webster said.

Robert Brown has posted bail. No other information was available at press time.
