BAR HARBOR — The Mount Desert Island Biological Laboratory is constructing a new laboratory building to expand its research into why some species can regrow limbs.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the $4.5 million project was held Friday at the marine research institution, located in the Salisbury Cove area of Bar Harbor.

The facility will be used by scientists who hope to learn why some primitive organisms such as skates and zebrafish can regenerate their limbs and organs, while humans cannot.

The project is expected to create 25 construction jobs over two years, and support the creation of 20 to 25 permanent jobs at MDI Biological Lab over five years.
