BIDDEFORD — City voters opened Biddeford’s doors to a racino tonight.
Residents voted 4,636-to-3,244 in favor of allowing the city to host a harness track-slot machine complex.
Scarborough Downs and hotel company Ocean Properties Ltd. announced plans for a $125 million racino complex a little more than a month ago. The project, called Biddeford Downs, is proposed for an 88-acre parcel off Andrews Road, west of the Maine Turnpike.
The ballot question was the first hurdle for the project. In addition to going through the local planning process, Biddeford Downs will also need a change in state law. It will also need an exemption if the Oxford casino referendum passes.
