BOSTON  — The Coast Guard says the owner of a New Jersey-based fishing boat reports the vessel is safe and on its way to Portland.

A search was launched for the Cape May-based “Retriever” and its four-person crew after a wave set off its emergency radio beacon early Monday morning off the Massachusetts coast.

The Coast Guard said the boat’s master was able to contact the owner by cell phone several hours later. The master said the boat lost generator power, making it diffcult to communicate earlier.

The boat was off Rockport, Mass., at about 4:20 a.m. when the Coast Guard first grew concerned. Coast Guard Petty Officer Connie Terrell says weather had been a problem in the area with 25-30 knot winds and 15-foot seas.
