NEW PORTLAND, Maine  — The Army says a Maine soldier killed in Afghanistan died of wounds suffered from small-arms fire when his unit came under attack.

The Army says 20-year-old Spc. Andrew Hutchins was killed Monday while on tower duty in Khost Province in eastern Afghanistan near Pakistan.

Hutchins was from New Portland and a 2008 graduate of Carrabec High School in North Anson. He was serving as a military policeman assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.

Hutchins joined the Army in September 2008.

The Army says Hutchins is survived by his wife, Heather Hutchins, of Clarksville, Tenn.; his father, Jeffrey Hutchins, of Leeds; and his mother, Robin Poulin, of Waltham.
