AUGUSTA — Maine Gov. John Baldacci is using his weekly radio address to express gratitude to those who’ve served their country in uniform.

Baldacci says he hopes the parades and banners, flag-lined streets and parades demonstrate, at least in a small way, that Mainers are thankful for their service. Veterans Day came as two Mainers gave the ultimate sacrifice.

The holiday coincided with memorial service at Houlton High School for Marine 1st Lt. James Zimmerman. A New Portland native, Army Spc. Andrew Hutchins, also was killed in Afghanistan.

In the Republican response, Kevin Raye of Perry, the nominee for Senate president, says Maine voters on Nov. 2 sent Maine in a new direction by electing a new Republican governor and Republican majorities in the Maine Senate and House for the first time in a half century.
