PORTLAND — Evan Jendrasko scored on a 1-yard run with 30 seconds left to give Cheverus a one-point lead and the Stags’ defense held on as a potential winning field goal of 36 yards by Deering with 6.9 seconds sailed just wide in Cheverus’ 35-34 win for the Western Maine Class A football championship before an estimated crowd of 4,100 fans today Cheverus.

The Stags (11-0) will play Bangor (10-1) for the state title next Saturday at Fitzpatrick Stadium. Games times for the three state finals at Fitzpatrick will be announced Monday.

Deering (8-3) trailed 29-6 in the second quarter before scoring 28 straight points to take a 34-29 lead on a 9-yard  pass from Jamie Ross to Nick DiBiase with 7:38 remaining in the game.

Cheverus, led by all-around standout Peter Gwilym, drove 70 yards for the winning score. The Stags got the ball with 7:30 left and used up seven minutes in the drive that featured the running of Gwilym, a senior quarterback/defensive back.
