BOYS BASKETBALL: Blazes fall to 1-1

The Westbrook boys basketball team fell to 1-1 on the season after dropping a 52-35 decision to Cheverus (2-0) at home on Dec. 14.

After jumping out to a quick 5-2 lead, the Blazes allowed Cheverus to reel off 10 straight points and the Stags led 12-5 after the first quarter. The Stags continued to keep the pressure going in the second, taking a 25-15 lead into halftime.

Westbrook managed to chip away at the Cheverus lead in the third, but still entered the final eight minutes down 35-24. Edwin Grand led the Blazes with eight points in the game.

The Blazes will be back on the court on Dec. 17 as they will travel to Windham for a 7 p.m. game. Westbrook will return home on Dec. 21 to host Massabesic at 7 p.m.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Stags top Westbrook

Just four days after the Westbrook girls basketball team opened the season with a 43-21 over Kennebunk, the Blazes suffered their first loss of the season, falling 67-35 to Cheverus on Dec. 14.

The Stags (2-0) got a solid offensive performance from Morgan Cahill, who pumped in 27 points in the winning effort. Westbrook was led offensively by Jessica Harris, who had 10 points and Katelyn Benson, who scored eight, including two from beyond the 3-point arc.

Westbrook will look to get back on the winning track on the road against Massabesic on Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. The Blazes will also travel to Windham on Dec. 23 for a 7 p.m. game.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Rams get second win

The Gorham girls basketball team is still perfect on the young season, running their record to 2-0 with a 47-23 win over Marshwood on Tuesday night.

Gorham dominated the contest from the opening tap, outscoring the Hawks 17-8 in the first half. The Rams didn’t let Marshwood make up any ground in the second half as they held the Hawks to just 15 points while scoring 30 to cruise to the win.

The Rams’ offense was led by Mia Rapolla, who had 22 points, including a 3-pointer and 11 free throws. Gorham’s Kristin Ross chipped in with 13 points in the winning effort.

The Rams will be home this Friday night as they host Thornton Academy at 7 p.m. The Rams have another home game scheduled for Dec. 21, as they will square off against Deering at 7 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Hawks top Gorham

The Gorham boys basketball team fell to 0-2 on the season with a 55-32 loss at Marshwood Tuesday night.

The first half of this contest was a relatively close one, with Gorham going into the halftime break trailing 23-20. But Marshwood turned on the jets in the second half, going on a 19-6 third-quarter run to break the game open for good. The Rams were held to just 12 points in the second half while the Hawks poured in 32.

Andy Turner was the offensive leader for the Rams, scoring nine points including one from 3-point rage.

Gorham will have a tough test on Friday night as it looks to secure its first win of the season with a 7 p.m. road game at Thornton Academy. The Rams will then travel to Deering on Dec. 21 for a 7 p.m. game.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Scots edge out Tigers

The Bonny Eagle boys basketball team remained undefeated in 2010-2011 with a 56-45 win at Biddeford on Tuesday night.

The Scots turned what had been a tight game into a 10-point lead in the third quarter when they outscored the Tigers 20-10 to go up 40-29 after three. In fact, the scoring run in the third quarter was the big difference in the game as the two evenly matched teams were never more than one point apart in the other three periods.

Dustin Cole led the Bonny Eagle offense with a game-high 19 points, including four 3-pointers in the contest. Cole Libby had 11 in the game and Cam McKague chipped in seven.

The Scots will be looking to go 3-0 this Friday night when they host Noble at 7 p.m.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Trojans edge Bulldogs

It came right down to the wire, but the Thornton Academy boys basketball team was able to pull out a close road win over Portland in the season opener on Dec. 10.

The Trojans survived a Bulldog comeback attempt in the final minutes to hold on for the 57-53 win.

The contest was back-and forth the whole way, with the Bulldogs taking a 30-24 lead into halftime, only to see Thornton outscore them 18-9 in the third quarter to take a 42-39 lead into the fourth. Portland did its best to overtake the Trojans, but Thornton was able to outscore the Bulldogs 15-14 over the final eight minutes to hold on for the win.

James Ek led all scorers with 19 points, including four 3-pointers. In fact, Ek only scored two of his points from the field, getting the rest from beyond the arc and on the free throw line. Andrew Shaw chipped in with 11 points for Thornton and Justin Pollard had 10 points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Trojans outlast Bulldogs

The Thornton Academy girls basketball team got its first win of the season Friday night, cruising to a 55-41 win at home over Portland.

The Trojans got off to a quick start in the contest, jumping out to an 11-3 lead on their way to a 29-25 halftime advantage. Thornton kept up the offensive pressure in the third quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 11-6 to widen their lead. The fourth quarter was no better for Portland, as the Trojans outscored them 15-10, allowing Thornton to hold on for the win.

Hannah Ebling led the Trojans with 21 points, including two 3-pointers. Olivia Shaw had two big 3-pointers early in the contest on her way to 13 points.

BOYS BASKETBALL: Seagulls destroy Sacopee Valley

This one was never even close.

On Friday night, the Old Orchard Beach boys basketball team traveled to Sacopee Valley and did not act like polite guests, absolutely demolishing their hosts 62-28.

The Seagulls scored almost all the points they needed for the win in the first quarter, jumping out to a 26-6 lead, going into the halftime break with a 34-10 lead. At that point, the Gulls could have stopped scoring for the entire second half and still won, but they kept playing, and it was Sacopee Valley that was kept off the scoreboard as Old Orchard Beach blanked them 18-0 in the third quarter.

Ryheem Lang and Andrew Fleury both had 11 points for the Gulls in the win and Nate Dow and Jason Dutton added 10 each.

GIRLS BASKETBALL: Gulls drop close one

Sacopee Valley 23

It took overtime, but the Old Orchard Beach girls basketball team dropped its first game of the season by a close 23-19 score at Sacopee Valley Friday night.

The game was a low-scoring affair throughout as the two teams went into the halftime break with the Seagulls leading 9-4. In fact, neither team scored double figures until Sacopee Valley managed 10 in the fourth.

The Seagulls were outscored 4-0 in overtime as Sacopee Valley sealed the win.
