BREWER — The state Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause of an early morning fire that killed a man and injured three people.

The fire broke out around 5:30 a.m. this morning at a home at 403 Day Rd. A 64-year-old man died in the blaze. Three others were injured, including Noufissa Bernikhow, 49; Yahya Daghmoumi, 28; and Soadia Gusha, 51, who suffered smoke inhalation. Bernikhow and Daghmoumi were treated at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor and were released from the hospital. Gusha, the home owner, is listed in serious condition at the hospital. The family is originally from Morocco.

Sgt. Joel Davis, a supervisor at the state’s Fire Marshall’s Office said the home was occupied by five people. He said the fire appears to have started in the man’s bedroom, which he was renting from the home owners.

Fire officials are still investigating the cause.

Officials from the American Red Cross and Salvation Army are working with the family to provide temporary shelter.
