RUMFORD  — Organizers of the U.S. Cross Country Championships in Rumford, are breathing a sigh of relief thanks to the East Coast snowstorm.

Cindy Decker from Black Mountain ski area says the snowfall was needed, and will help groomers prepare surfaces for the event that starts this Sunday.

About 500 athletes are expected to begin arriving later this week. Saturday is the first training day, and the event gets under way the following day.

U.S. Ski Team headliners include returning U.S. Champion Simi Hamilton of Aspen, Colo., Liz Stephen of East Montpelier, Vt., and Morgan Arritola of Fairfield, Idaho.
