SACO — Saco police say they are searching for two men who were interrupted during a burglary, fired shots at the homeowner then carjacked a South Portland teenager and forced her to drive them to a rendezvous with a getaway car.

The incident happened on Thursday on Louden Road when a 38-year-old man arrived home at 3 p.m. and confronted two men who had broken into his house, police said. The man chased the two, one hauling an orange loading dolly with a strap. They ran into the road and forced a car, driven by an 18-year-old woman from South Portland, to stop. The men were loading the dolly into the car when the burglary victim caught up, police said.

One of the men pulled a handgun and fired two shots and one of the slugs pierced the man’s pants, but caused no injury, said Chief Brad Paul.

After speaking with someone by cell phone, the men ordered the teen to drive to the corner of New County Road and Smutty Lane. There, the suspects climbed into a red sedan and drove off, police said.

The teen started driving back toward Route 112 and was pulled over near the Saco Middle School, police said. Police initially treated her as a suspect, but later decided she was coerced into driving the men away.

Police ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious at that time in that area call 282-8216 or 284-4535.

The suspects are white and in their early 20s. One had dark hair, brown eyes and a beard and was wearing a brown canvas work jacket, a T-shirt and work boots. The other was clean shaven, with straight hair combed back and a long, narrow nose, police said.
