Writer group, author visit

The Kennebunk Free Library’s new writers group begins meeting from 10 a.m. to noon on Friday in Hank’s Room. David Morse will head the sessions, providing feedback for attendees current writing projects. Space is limited to eight. To register, call Morse at 251-4847.

The library, 112 Main St., also will offer the first of four quarterly workshops from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesday based on the Amy Wood book “Life Your Way and How to Find It.” The session will precede a visit by Wood at 7 p.m. Jan. 27 to debut her new book “Life Your Way: Refresh Your Approach to Success and Breathe Easier in a Fast-paced World.”

Medical marijuana class

The Cancer Community Center is holding an information session at 7:30 tonight at the center, 778 Main St., about changes to the state’s Medical Marijuana Laws.

USM president to speak

Selma Botman, president of the University of Southern Maine, will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Jan. 19 at Falmouth Memorial Library, 5 Lunt Road, on “The Necessity of Transformation in Troubled Economic Times.”

Botman will talk about her charge of bringing down a $4 million debt at USM when she became its president more than two years ago. The Southern Maine Section of National Council of Jewish Women is sponsoring the event, which is open to the public.

Student auction for UN trip

The Midcoast Model United Nations Team is holding a silent auction of student services through Jan. 22 at Skidompha Library to raise funds for a student trip to the Columbia University Model UN Conference later this month, as well as to contribute to the group’s scholarship fund.

Students are offering their services, ranging from making home-cooked meals, to giving Italian or music lessons and snow shoveling, computer help-software installation, wood chopping and tutoring.

The Sanford Parks and Recreation Department is offering its annual Shawnee Peak ski package for teens, including transportation by bus from Sanford Junior High School at 2:30 p.m. and a 9 p.m. return, on Feb. 3, 10 and 17 and March 3 and 10. Coach transportation with movie and ski storage is planned.

Frozen race aids campers

Jimmy the Greek’s will host its annual Frozen 4-Miler Race at 12:30 p.m. Saturday to benefit “Send a Kid to Camp” scholarships for the Recreation Department and the Boys & Girls Club Alumni Association.

Race day registration is 0 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at Jimmy the Greek’s. Cost is $15 for advance registration at www.baystateevents.com or $19 on race day. The first 100 entrants receive a T-shirt.

Habitat housing orientation

Habitat for Humanity Homeowner/7 Rivers Maine will hold an orientation Jan. 29 for families that wish to apply to own one of two upcoming home-building projects expected to begin this spring: a three-unit condominium development in Brunswick and a single-family home in Topsham.

Those applying must live or work in Sagadahoc or Lincoln counties or the towns of Brunswick or Harpswell and earn less than 80 percent of the area median income (e.g. $49,280 for a family of four) and live in substandard housing.
