Potluck dinner featured as Slow Food Portland meets

Slow Food Portland’s next meeting and potluck dinner will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the new Portland Food Lab in the old Roma Cafe, 769 Congress St.

Bring a dish to share and your own serving ware, plate, bowl and utensils. A kitchen will be available for heating up dishes if needed.

Don Lindgren and Samantha Hoyt-Lindgren of Rabelais will be talking about what kind of events and programming will be happening in the space in the coming months.

The potluck is open to both members and non-members.

Whole Foods hosts lecture on wellness, sushi-making

Whole Foods Market, 2 Somerset St., will hold a “Stay Well This Winter” lecture and sampling event Saturday.

From 10:30 to 11:15 a.m., Edie Johnston, co-owner of Maine Medicinals, will give a lecture on “Understanding Anti-Oxidants and Wellness.” The event is free, but space is limited and registration is required. Call 774-7711.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., there will be product sampling in the Whole Body Department. During the same time period, Meg Wolff, two-time cancer survivor and author, will sign her new cookbook of plant-based recipes, “A Life in Balance.”

Whole Foods Market also is sponsoring two sushi-making classes for children and adults this month.

“Kids’ Sushi 101” will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. Saturday. This hands-on class is suitable for children ages 9 to 13, and costs $15 per child. The fee includes a bamboo rolling mat and all ingredients.

“Sushi 101 for Adults” will be held Jan. 19 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and costs $20 per person.

Space in both classes is limited. Reserve spots at customer service.

FALMOUTH

Farmers market on Saturday moved to a new location

The Cumberland Farmers Market Association has moved its Saturday winter market from Skillins Greenhouses in West Cumberland to Allen, Sterling and Lothrop at 191 U.S. Route 1 in Falmouth, the site of the Wednesday farmers markets.

Cumberland customers had requested a more “errand-friendly” location for the Saturday market, which features fresh produce, grass-fed meats, raw dairy and free-range poultry.

The hours for both markets are 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

WINSLOW

Hands-on demonstration covers fermented foods

Simon Frost of Thirty Acre Farm will give a hands-on demonstration of “Fermented Foods” on Thursday.

The demonstration will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Winslow Public Library, 136 Halifax St. It’s part of “Hands-On Health,” a monthly support meeting that offers advice on how to be healthy “the natural way.”

Event to bring investors, food producers together

Slow Money Maine, a group that brings food producers and farmers together with potential investors, will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Jan. 19 at the Viles Arboretum, 153 Hospital St.

The gathering will focus on informal networking, regional and national Slow Money updates, and presentations from the governance committee, Aaron Fuchs from the Island Institute, Gloria Varney from Nezinscot Farm, and Carol Ford and Karen Haas from Cranberry Island Kitchen.
