CAMDEN – More than 400 contestants from across the United States competed over the weekend at the 21st annual U.S. National Toboggan Championships at the Camden Snow Bowl.
Contestants flew down a wooden chute at speeds averaging 40 mph onto frozen Hosmer Pond.
Jeff Kuller, the general manager of the Snow Bowl, said more than 8,000 people attended the two-day event. Proceeds support operations of the town-owned ski area.
Several Maine teams won their division, including Cracker My Ash of Fairfield in the three-person division; Four Wingnuts of Searsmont in the four-person division; Rum Runners of Thomaston in the experimental division; Hot Women on Wood in the all-female division; and the Cadavers in the oldest division — their average age is 81.
The best costume went to the Royal Dutch National Toboggan Team.
