Cumberland Police Chief Joseph Charon said that John Elvis Fenn, 29, was driving very slowly north on Route 88 just after it crosses into Cumberland from Falmouth at 2:30 a.m. this morning. A Cumberland officer checked the license plate of the car Fenn was driving and it was unregistered, so he tried to pull him over.

A couple of times, Fenn started to pull over, then pulled back onto the road. Finally he speeded up and drove down Heritage Lane only to get stuck in a cul de sac, Charon said. The officer pulled his cruiser across the end of the cul de sac. Fenn responded by driving at the cruiser, hitting the rear of the driver’s side and spinning it around, Charon said.

Fenn continued north following Route 88 to Route 1 in Yarmouth, then into Freeport and finally into Brunswick. Yarmouth police deployed spike mats, which slowed him down but he was able to avoid some spike mats, Charon said.

Once in Brunswick, officers set up a series of spike mats so Fenn could not avoid them, Charon said. When the car became disabled on Maine Street, Fenn ran, and officers were able to catch him behind some houses.

There were no injuries and police charged Fenn with eluding an officer, aggravated criminal mischief,  assault on an officer, and aggravated reckless conduct and they are considering additional charges.
