The U.S. Department of Energy has granted a loan guarantee of $102 million to the developers of the Record Hill in Oxford County.

In announcing the conditional commitment for a loan guarantee, U.S. Energy Secretary Steven Chu said “Record Hill introduces an innovative technology to the U.S. that will boost domestic wind generation and help us reach President Obama’s goal of doubling clean energy produced in America by 2035.”

Record Hill Wind LLC is a project of Independence Wind, the Brunswick-based company headed by former Gov. Angus King and Rob Gardiner, a past president of the Maine Public Broadcasting Network. Environmental permits were received in 2009 and clearing began the same year.

In January of this year, the Maine Supreme Judicial Court heard a case challenging the rules for permitting commercial wind energy, including the Record Hill project. The court has not yet handed down a ruling.
