PORTLAND – Anyone who’s interested in a retail job in downtown Portland is in luck.

Renys, the Maine-based discount department store chain that plans to open a store at 540-544 Congress St., will hold a job fair to fill 50 positions.

The job fair is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. March 11 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Faustine Reny, the company’s spokeswoman, said the job fair will be a chance for potential workers to learn about the company. “We want people who don’t just want a job, but want to be part of our family,” she said.

She said the company will be looking for full-time and part-time cashiers, managers, stockers and clerks, all of whom will pitch in to help customers. “Everyone does everything,” she said.

Reny said the jobs will pay more than minimum wage, but the details are still being worked out. The full-time jobs and some of the part-time jobs include benefits such as 401(k) plans, and health and dental insurance.

The Portland store will be open daily except for Christmas, Thanksgiving and Easter, she said.

Construction is under way at the site, which most recently housed an L.L. Bean outlet and an Olympia Sports store. Renys will have about 22,000 square feet of retail space when it opens in mid-April. A banner is up, and the company is working on signs.

Reny said store managers will be at the job fair to answer questions and provide information about the company. People may fill out job applications and drop off resumes during the fair. Some will be called later for interviews.

“It is more of a fun fair than a job fair,” Reny said.

Reny said the company has been flooded with calls and e-mails from people who are interested in working at the Portland store, which will be the company’s 15th location.

Renys, based in Newcastle, employs about 450 people and hires more for the summer and Christmas.
