Three Maine wrestlers finished among the medalists Saturday at the New England high school wrestling championships in New Haven, Conn.

Mike Cyr, the first wrestler from Scarborough High to win a Class A state title, took third place in the 215-pound division.

Connor Sheehan, a 103-pound sophomore from Fryeburg Academy, and Jacob Powers, a two-time Class B 160-pound champion from Camden Hills, placed fourth in their divisions.

The top six finishers in each weight class are awarded medals in the regional competition, which included more than 200 wrestlers from the six New England states.

Cyr, a senior, dropped into the consolation round after he was pinned by Patrick Gillen of Shelton, Conn., during Saturday morning’s quarterfinal round. He reeled off four wins in the consolation bracket to finish third. Cyr went 5-1 in the meet.

“He’s a special kid,” Scarborough Coach Phil Hamilton said. “As a competitor, he’s just poised and focused.”

Both Sheehan and Powers dropped down into the consolation bracket after advancing into the semifinal round of the championship bracket.

Powers, the only Maine wrestler to take an unbeaten record into the New Englands, had a 3-2 record in the meet.

Sheehan also went 3-2.
