PORTLAND –  Independent professionals looking for a place to do business have a new option.

In February, a “co-working space” called PelotonLabs opened at 795 Congress St., allowing people without access to a traditional office to rent part-time office space.

Elizabeth Trice, a consultant who manages PelotonLabs, said people work better when surrounded by peers. But often, small-business owners, entrepreneurs and creative types conduct business alone, such as at home, at a coffee shop or in a quiet library, she said.

Trice said co-working spaces like PelotonLabs, which rent desks and office space on a short-term basis, are places where professionals can work in the company of peers.

“They can get business from each other and fellowship from other people who are starting something new,” Trice said.

Rates at PelotonLabs range from $40 per month for eight daytime hours to $400 per month for 24-hour access. Membership includes Internet service, but members must bring their own phones, Trice said.

She said the shared-office concept has gained traction in many major U.S. cities, but is relatively new to Maine.

PelotonLabs is hosting an open house, which the company calls a “Jelly,” on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon.
