AUGUSTA — Proposed funding for welfare and MaineCare are coming under the microscope of the Legislature’s budget reviewing committee.

The Appropriations Committee takes up spending proposals today — including some cuts — in those programs. Up for review is spending for food supplement services, general assistance, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families and other programs. The Health and Human Services Committee will be sitting in on the hearings.

A coalition of more than 150 advocacy organizations and service providers will also be watching the proceedings closely.

The Maine Can Do Better coalition plans a rally in the State House Hall of Flags to address the budget proposal, which it says cuts into health care and support services for families.
