BIDDEFORD – A Mexican restaurant will be moving into a Biddeford Crossing building that has been vacant for nearly three years.

El Santo Coyote Mexican Restaurant will take over the space formerly used by T.G.I. Friday’s, said New England Development property manager Tom Bowen.

“We’re happy about that. It’s always good to see activity and that will fit well in the market,” Bowen said.

Construction is already under way to convert the space. An opening date wasn’t immediately available.

Biddeford Crossing, which opened in 2006 on Route 111 off the Maine Turnpike, has had several businesses move in and out since then.

Two major retail businesses, Old Navy and Linens ‘n Things, left, and those storefronts remain vacant. Fashion Bug also left, and Nonesuch Books took over part of that space.

Among the restaurants, Chili’s Grill & Bar Restaurant closed and was replaced by Kobe Japanese Grill.

It’s possible that New England Development, the company that developed and manages Biddeford Crossing, will combine the Old Navy and Linens ‘n Things spaces to create more leasing options, Bowen said.

“There’s a very active interest in the space,” Bowen said. “We’re working on finalizing that and having a new tenant in there as soon as possible.”
