PORTLAND — The public will get a chance later this month to offer advice on what to look for in a new city manager.

Three city councilors who make up the search committee and the consulting firm hired to help select a new manager will hold a series of meetings on March 23 to discuss the qualities of the person who will be hired to replace Joe Gray, who retired last month as manager after a decade in the job.

The committee plans to hold a series of meetings with groups, such as city employees, heads of nonprofit groups and the school board, during the day and then hold a meeting for members of the general public at 7 p.m. in the council’s chambers at City Hall.

“Hiring a new city manager is one of the most important decisions the city council makes, which is why getting feedback from the public early and often ensures that the process and outcome are good – not just for elected officials but for the city as a whole,” said Cheryl Leeman, who chairs the council’s search comittee.

Those unable to attend a meeting can send thoughts to citymanagersearch@portlandmaine.gov. The job description for the city manager, the city’s recruitment brochure and a timeline for the search process are available online.

April 1st is the deadline for application submissions for the position and the council has indicated it would like to select a new manager by summer.
