JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Shaun Coughlin pitched a five-hitter to earn his first career victory as the University of Maine baseball team won two games Sunday, beating Fairleigh Dickinson and St. Peter’s by identical 5-1 scores.

Against Fairleigh Dickinson (4-13), Stephen Perakslis and Jonathan Balentina combined to scatter nine hits, and the Black Bears (9-16) broke a 1-1 tie with four runs in the sixth inning. Maine took the lead on back-to-back triples by Joey Martin and Justin Leisenheimer. Alex Calbick and Mike Connolly each added an RBI single, and Connolly scored on an error.

Coughlin (1-0) struck out eight and walked none against St. Peter’s (5-14). Calbick’s two-run single in the bottom of the fourth erased a 1-0 deficit.

ST. JOSEPH’S 3, NEW JERSEY CITY 1: Kevin Chamberlain pitched a four-hitter with nine strikeouts, and the Monks (6-7) closed their southern swing with a win over the Gothic Knights (2-11) at Jersey City, N.J.

The Monks broke a 1-1 tie with two runs in the ninth inning on singles by Dan Achorn and Nate Martin.

Mike Pratt finished with three hits, and Chris Campbell and Todd Keneborus each had two for the Monks. Campbell hit an RBI single in the fifth.


MAINE 9, MARYLAND-BALTIMORE COUNTY 4: Kali Burnham had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored for the Black Bears (11-19, 3-0 America East) against the Retrievers (14-12, 0-3) at Baltimore.

Burnham drove in a run and scored during a four-run third inning, then added an RBI single and scored again in the seventh.

Kirstin Allen and Brynne Davis each had an RBI single during a three-run rally in the sixth.


CASTLETON STATE 16, SOUTHERN MAINE 8: Marie Van Der Kar had five goals and the Spartans (3-2) scored eight goals in each half against the Huskies (1-5) at Memorial Field in Portland.

Rosie Forster and Mary Vaughan scored three goals apiece, Lauren Santo had two goals and Samantha Kiesel made 12 saves for USM.
