School of Music concerts

The University of Southern Maine’s School of Music will present its ensemble performance series at 7:30 p.m. Mondays in Corthell Concert Hall.

The USM Flute Studio Ensemble will kick off the series with a performance this Monday. The Guitar Studio Ensemble will perform April 18 and the Trombone Studio Ensemble will offer a free concert April 25.

Program on assisted living

The Southern Maine Assisted Living Education Group will lead a free, public discussion, “Is Assisted Living in Your Future?” 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today at Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road.

Specialists will review aspects of assisted living such as services, accommodations, payment sources and licensing levels.

Light refreshments will be served.

Bicycle Coalition swap event

The Bicycle Coalition of Maine will hold its Bike Swap from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the University of Southern Maine’s Sullivan Gym.

The admission is $3, with free admission for students at USM, University of New England, Southern Maine Community College and University of Maine as well as children 12 or younger. A 15 percent commission on bike sales will support the coalition’s work to improve bicycling in Maine.

Those wanting to sell bicycles should drop them off at Sullivan Gym between 8 and 9:30 a.m. on the day of the swap. To arrange an earlier drop-off, call 623-4511.

Report on Safe Passage

Richard Schmaltz, executive director of Safe Passage, will report on its program in Guatemala from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St.

For the past five years, Schmaltz and his wife, Susan, have provided direction for Safe Passage’s Early Childhood Education Center and advocated for new directions in the Guatemalan educational system.

McAuley Gold Ball banquet

Catherine McAuley High School is holding its Gold Ball Banquet at 6 p.m. Monday at the Italian Heritage Center. The school’s basketball team will be recognized. An Italian buffet will be served.

Sarah MacLaughlin, local parenting educator and author of “What Not to Say: Tools for Talking With Young Children,” will speak at 6:30 to 8 p.m. April 13 at Breakwater School’s Jessie Auditorium, 856 Brighton Ave.

The discussion is for parents of children ages 6 to 11 years old.

Another discussion at 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 13 will be “Understanding My Young Child: An Evening of Conversation, Camaraderie, and Community.” Molly Thompson, the school’s early-childhood and lower elementary school director, will lead the discussion, which is for parents of toddlers through kindergarten age.

Lecture on Holocaust sites

The University of Southern Maine’s American and New England Studies Program will host a lecture about Holocaust museums and memorials at 4:30 p.m. Thursday at the Abromson Community Education Center.

The free lecture will be presented by Natasha Goldman, adjunct professor of art history at Bowdoin College. For details, call 780-4920.

Activist to discuss Darfur

John Prendergast, author, human rights activist, and co-founder of the Enough Project, will give a free lecture at 7 p.m. Monday at the University of Southern Maine’s Hannaford Auditorium, 88 Bedford St. The lecture is titled “Turning Bystanders into Upstanders; You and the Struggle to End Genocide in Darfur.”

Last weekend for ‘Pinocchio’

Windham Center Stage Theater will present its last performances of Pinocchio Friday through Sunday at Town Hall, 8 School Road.

Figure Skating Club show

The North Atlantic Figure Skating Club will host its 13th annual show at the Family Ice Center in Falmouth, 20 Hat Trick Drive, at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. There will be guest performances by Yasmin Siraj of Brookline, Mass., and Morgan Sewall of Scarborough.

The club’s top freestyle skaters will perform solos, including Julia Gilman, Ava Demer and Elizabeth Stewart, all of Falmouth; Haley Rice and Sophie Lawsure, both of Scarborough; Samantha Abelson of Kennebunk; Mira D’Amato of Portland; Meaghan Monaghan of Cape Elizabeth; Emily Bolles of Yarmouth; and Franz Peter-Jerosch of Bowdoinham.

Jennifer Greene of Falmouth and Kelley Reardon of Scarborough will skate farewell solo performances.

Tickets are $8 for children and seniors, $12 for adults, and $20 for premium seating.
