SCARBOROUGH — The postseason has arrived for outdoor track and tennis.
The Southern Maine Activities Association championship outdoor track meet is Saturday at Scarborough. The Western Maine Conference championship meet will also be held Saturday, at Falmouth.
Cape Elizabeth wrapped up its regular season last Friday, joining A.R. Gould and powerhouses Falmouth and Greely at Yarmouth. The boys’ team finished fifth, while the girls came in fourth.
Scarborough hosted the other Cumberland County teams, including South Portland, in its final meet last Friday. The Red Storm were first in the girls’ meet and third on the boys’ side. The Red Riots came in second in the boys’ meet and third among the girls.
Tennis’ team playoffs were scheduled to start Thursday of next week, but the Maine Principals’ Association announced Tuesday that it was adjusting the schedule due to backups caused by the recent spate of bad weather. As a result, the preliminary round is Wednesday, the quarterfinals will be held next Friday and the semifinals June 6. The regional finals will be June 8 and states June 11, as originally scheduled.
Cape Elizabeth’s defending Class B state champion boys’ team wound up 11-1 this year and will likely be second to Falmouth for the tournament.
The Capers doubles team of Ben Morse and Sam Sherman defeated Falmouth’s Harlon Cutshall and Sam Holland, 6-1, 6-3, to win the Western Maine Conference doubles championship last weekend.
Scarborough was 11-0 heading into Wednesday’s finale at Kennebunk. The Red Storm, with a victory, will likely be the No. 1 seed. South Portland will fall short of the playoffs. The Red Riots were 2-8 and 10th in the region (where only eight teams qualify) entering Wednesday’s finales versus Gorham and Portland.
On the girls’ side, in Western A, Scarborough finished 9-3 and appears ticketed for the No. 4 seed. South Portland wound up a very misleading 5-7 and will be either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed. The Red Riots lost four matches by a 3-2 score this spring and were competitive with even the highest ranked teams. No one will want to draw South Portland in the postseason. In Western B, Cape Elizabeth was 7-4 and fourth going into its finale Wednesday at Yarmouth. The Capers were slightly ahead of Lincoln Academy for the No. 4 seed entering that match and hoped to stay there to guarantee a home match in the quarterfinals.
The singles tournament was also affected by the weather. The Round of 48 is now scheduled for Monday. The Round of 16 is the following day and the semifinals and championships will be contested Saturday, June 4. All rounds will be contested at Bates College in Lewiston.
