ELIOT — Residents in the southern Maine town of Eliot are voting on three proposed ordinances regulating strip clubs.

The vote at Saturday’s town meeting will come a couple of weeks after the owner of the proposed 403 Gentleman’s Club filed a federal lawsuit challenging the town’s moratorium on nude entertainment. Voters approved the moratorium May 14 after the strip club proposal surfaced.

The proposed ordinances would ban full nudity and alcohol sales and prohibit a strip club from operating between midnight and 6 a.m.

The lawsuit, filed in late May, says the club’s entertainment is protected by the Constitution while providing a “beneficial social activity.”

Portland attorney Thomas Hallett, who represents the club owner, tells the Portsmouth Herald that the town is “thwarting” the opening of the club on Route 236.
