WINSLOW – The Winslow High School teacher who coached the school’s state championship boys basketball team in 2003 was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of unlawful sexual touching.

Winslow Police Chief Jeffery Fenlason said Scott R. Wood, 38, of Oakland was arrested without incident Friday afternoon at his home. He was released on unsecured bond at the Winslow Police Department.

Fenlason said the two counts involve the same female student, who is younger than 18. Additional details were not released.

Fenlason encouraged parents in the community who believe their children may have had inappropriate contact with Wood, a social science teacher, to call Detective Gina Henderson at 872-5215.

In 2002-03, Wood’s first season as coach of the Class B Winslow boys basketball team, the Black Raiders won their first state championship in 64 years.

This spring, Wood was named the Morning Sentinel Boys Basketball Coach of the Year; he was selected Morning Sentinel Girls Soccer Coach of the Year five times. Wood was named Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B Coach of the Year for girls soccer in 2008 and 2009.

Wood won his 100th career game as boys basketball coach on Feb. 8 of this year.

Before taking over the girls soccer job in Winslow in 1998, Wood coached junior varsity soccer for two years at Gorham High School.

Fenlason said that if Wood is found guilty, he will face as much as 364 days in jail for each count. A message left on Wood’s home phone was not returned Friday.
