ABOUT 60 STUDENTS in The Gym Dandies participated in the July 4 parade in Philadelphia.

The parade route went through the historic district of Philadelphia, past such famous landmarks as Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, and ending at Penn’s Landing, a beautiful waterfront park along the Delaware River.

The Gym Dandies celebrated their 30th anniversary this year. The group has performed in New York, Washington, D.C., West Virginia, Montreal, and cities and towns throughout Maine. The Gym Dandies will be featured in the Yarmouth Clam Festival Parade on July 15.

PORTLAND

THE CASCO BAY DISTRICT of the Boy Scouts of America, Pine Tree Council recently honored Capt. James McPherson, outgoing Northern New England Sector Commander for the U.S. Coast Guard, with the Citizen Scout Award.

McPherson was recognized for his service throughout his career in the Coast Guard and for his contributions to Portland’s waterfront and the community.

BIDDEFORD

A GIRLS NIGHT OUT fundraiser hosted by the Southern Maine Medical Center Auxiliary has raised nearly $9,000 toward fulfilling the auxiliary’s pledge of $100,000 to purchase an MRI breast coil for Southern Maine Medical Center’s women’s health department.

 

ST. ANDRE’S HEALTH CARE has named Helene Girard Kennedy, Sister Priscille Roy and Renee O’Neil its newest volunteer board of directors. Kennedy has worked at the Covance Health Economics and Outcomes Services Inc. since 1991, serving as vice president since 1998. Sister Roy is a member of the Good Shepherd Sisters of Quebec, the group that founded St. Andre’s Health Care. She helped found the SCIM convent in Jardim de Piranhas, Brazil. O’Neil has served on many volunteer boards, including as the restoration chairperson at the City Theater, a founding member of the Heart of Biddeford downtown planning committee, and the Tri City Arts Council. She is a sales and technical support assistant at the JPOS Software Co.

THE GUIDANCE OFFICE at Wells High School will cull the files of the Class of 2010 beginning Sept. 1. Records reflecting those students’ kindergarten through grade 12 activity that are not required to be archived will be destroyed with records retained to be transferred to microfiche. Students wishing their cumulative folder should submit their request in writing before September to Wells High School Guidance, Attn: Karen Quint, P.O. Box 579, Wells, ME 04090. THE DISTRICT SCHOOL COMMITTEE recently recognized eight retiring staff members and three former School Committee members.

Retiring are Andy Dufort (39 years), Sandi Knight (38 years), Jan Bonica and Cory Thyng (24 years each), Maida Magdon (17 years) and John Bailey (six years). Also retiring for the second time are Meleta Baker and Phil Stirk. Recognized for serving on the School Committee were Sue Pollard (1-plus years), Matt Chase (2 years) and Mike McDonald whose second term ended June 30. Staff members recognized for 20 years of service were Cindy Roche, Ellen Rodman, Renee Savage, Cheryl Mills and Deb Howard.

FALMOUTH

THE FALMOUTH HERITAGE Museum on Woods Road is presenting an exhibit: “Nursing in the Past.”

The exhibit will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays till the end of the month. The display will include clothing, invalid feeders, bed pans and many other items used by the nurses.
