Summer vacation waning

As in past years, Gorham schools will have a staggered start as the new school year gets under way this month.

Dennis Libby, chairman of the Gorham School Committee, has announced that kindergarten along with grades 6 and 9 will start school in Gorham on Monday, Aug. 29, and other grades will start on Tuesday, Aug. 30.

School gets under way for teachers on Thursday, Aug. 25.

The Gorham High School class of 1955 is planning a picnic 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, at Two Lights State Park in Cape Elizabeth.

Any Gorham graduate is welcome to attend. For more information, call Janice Weed at 839-3404.

Free backpacks

LifeChurch, 8 Elkins Road, is in the process of collecting 200 backpacks to give to those in need.

The church is collecting backpacks through Saturday, Aug 13, when it is sponsoring an outside concert at 6:30 p.m. The concert features Salvations House and Exit 244.

The event includes bonfires, food and music besides distributing the backpacks to anyone who would like to go and pick up one.

USM dean’s list

The University of Southern Maine has announced the dean’s list of full-time students from Maine for the spring semester.

Seeking founders’ descendants

Gorham’s 275th Commemorative Committee is still looking to list the names of any living descendants of the founding families: Phinney, Mosher, Hamblen, McLellan, Ayer, Irish, Reed, Cloutman, Bryant, Watson, Hodgdon, Stevens, and Meserve -who live in Gorham now.

The committee is asking people to check the lists and let it know if there are any changes to be made. The committee’s email is gorhambook275@gmail.com.

Suzie Phillips said a commemorative book would be published this fall. Then, it will be on sale for $10 at Baxter Library, Gorham Historical Society, and the town clerk’s office.

U.S. taxpayer debt

The Bureau of Public Debt reported on Aug. 4 that the U.S. taxpayer debt was $14,564,970,167,709.38.
