PORTLAND – Zach Johnson scored in the 50th minute as St. Joseph’s defeated Salve Regina 1-0 Friday in a college men’s soccer season opener.

Ross Suleski assisted on the winning goal and Kenny Grade made five saves for the shutout.

Kyle Kureczka had eight saves for the Seahawks.

MIT 7, USM 0: Zach Kabelac scored three times in the opening 20 minutes as the Engineers (1-0) rolled past the Huskies (0-1) at Portland.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

SACRED HEART 4, MAINE 3: Amanda Stiles scored the winner on a penalty kick at 86:09 as the Pioneers (1-1) edged the Black Bears (1-1) at Fairfield, Conn.

Maine trailed 1-0 at the half before Amanda Nellis scored consecutive goals early in the second half.

Meagan Price-Leibenzeder made eight saves for the Black Bears.

FOOTBALL

(17) MICHIGAN STATE 28, YOUNGSTOWN STATE 6: B.J. Cunningham caught nine passes for 130 yards and a touchdown, helping Michigan State (1-0) roll past Youngstown State (0-1) at East Lansing, Mich.

Kirk Cousins was 18 of 22 for 222 yards for the Spartans, who led 14-6 in the third quarter before Cousins threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cunningham in the back of the end zone.
