The Phoenix Coyotes recalled defenseman Chris Summers from the Portland Pirates on Monday to replace the injured Michal Rozsival.

Rozsival was hit in the face with a shot Sunday against the San Jose Sharks, injured his nose and was placed on injured reserve.

Summers, 6-foot-2, 209 pounds, appeared in two games with the Coyotes last season, collecting four penalty minutes.

Last season, Summers had a goal and seven assists with 52 penalty minutes in 58 games with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.

Summers was picked by the Coyotes in the first round (29th overall) in the 2006 draft.

Summers played in the Pirates’ opener Saturday night, a 4-2 victory at Bridgeport. Summers had two penalty minutes in the game.

The Pirates are off until Saturday night when they play their home opener against the Manchester Monarchs.
