Absentee ballot info

The office of Gorham Town Clerk Connie Loughran reports that absentee ballots are now available for the Nov. 8 state referendum, Cumberland County commissioner and annual Gorham municipal elections.

Absentee ballots will be available until Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. There are a number of different ways to obtain an absentee ballot:

• Go into the town clerk’s office and vote;

• call the town clerk’s office at 222-1670 to have a ballot mailed;

• an immediate family member can fill out an application and pick up a ballot or request that it be mailed;

• a voter may indicate a third person to pick up and deliver back the ballot. The application must be signed by the voter.

A ballot can be requested using the state’s online request form found at the following link: /www.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/AbsenteeBallot/index.pl.

GEF benefit spells fun

Gorham Educational Foundation is sponsoring its third annual Frederick Robie Cup Adult Spelling Bee at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the old Robie School, 668 Gray Road.

Admission is $10 and a limited number of tickets will be available at the door. Organizers expect about100 people to attend.

The foundation, a member of Gorham Business Exchange, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising money for projects within Gorham schools that promote educational excellence and leadership. This year marks the third year it has held this fundraiser, which has so far raised about $15,000 for its programs.

Often sporting creative names and even more creative costumes, 12 teams of three compete. Business, neighborhood, or civic groups might consider entering the bee, which could be a way to gain visibility for a group while supporting the organization.

A cash bar will be available and free food provided by Salty Dog Restaurant & Pub. Event sponsors include Wright Express, Great Falls Construction, Moody’s Collision, Nappi Distributors and Boom Technology.

‘Fiddle-icious’

on Gorham stage

Fiddle-icious, Maine’s largest fiddle orchestra with more than 80 musicians on stage, will perform in concert at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, in the McCormack Performing Arts Center at Gorham High School,? 41 Morrill Ave.

Fiddle-icious is directed by Don Roy, a fiddler from Gorham. Roy and his wife, Cindy Roy, providing piano accompaniment, both grew up in French Canadian families where music was an integral part of their lives.

The orchestra is a large and vibrant group of Maine musicians playing fiddle, piano, harp, guitar, banjo, accordion, cello, mandolin, tin whistle, flute, concertina and upright bass. The tunes are passed on from the Irish, Scottish, Quebecois and Acadian traditions and include reels, jigs, aires, marches, hornpipes, waltzes, step-dancing and singing.

Tickets, available at the door, are $8 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.

Great Falls Construction expands team

Great Falls Construction, a general contracting and construction company in Gorham, recently announced an expanded management team to support its new business operations plan.

Darren Shiers has been promoted to business operations manager. Shiers has spent the last 28-plus years in the construction industry and has been a Great Falls team member five years. Shiers recently completed the Spring Crossing project for Westbrook Housing and a corporate office renovation for Avesta Housing.

Todd Rothstein has re-established his full-time role as business development manager. Rothstein has 16 years of experience in the construction industry and has been with Great Falls the last five years.

Rothstein recently spent some time in the field as a project manager and was active on multiple projects including a substantial building renovation for Waban Projects, several Neighborhood Stabilization Projects for the Sanford Housing Authority, numerous Irving Oil Corp. projects.

Aaron Bourassa has been promoted to senior project manager. Bourassa has 19 years of construction experience and has been with Great for the last seven years. Bourassa will continue to manage projects and will also serve as a mentor to other project managers, site personnel, craftsmen, laborers, etc., in the company. Some of his most recent projects include Goodwill Industries in South Portland and Manchester. N.H.

Jeffrey Barker, who has 26 years of construction and project management experience, has joined the company as project manager and is managing two projects in the Lewiston/Auburn area. Scott Forbes has also joined Great Falls as project manager and, along with 22 years of experience in the construction industry, brings with him a background in engineering and architecture. Forbes is working on the Southern Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery project.
